On September 21st 2024, the official Israel account on the fascism petri dish that is Elon Musk's X posted the following: "Nazareth, the birthplace of Jesus, is under attack by Hezbollah. The Israeli town, also known as 'the Arab capital of Israel,' has a population that is around 70% Muslim and 30% Christian."

After a backlash pointing out that Jesus was actually born in Bethlehem, they changed it to "Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus" with the rest of the tweet remaining the same. While the post brought understandable ridicule, with takes basically along the lines of "they lie so much they even got Jesus' birthplace wrong," I think it's more useful to focus on the intended audience1 as that can help us understand something important about modern American and Israeli politics.

Regardless of the intention, the post served as yet another reminder that so much of Israeli discourse is geared towards American right-wing Christians who are more likely to believe in the dispensationalist2 and antisemitic end times which bring about the return of Christ than they are to take any of Jesus' teachings seriously. Quite the contrary, they are fine calling Jesus himself some weak socialist softie who wants to take their guns away, or something.3 Theirs is a cosmic battle where the forces of evil are basically everyone except them. More on that later.

The rest of the piece is behind a paywall although you can claim your free post below.
